Taylor Mac
“Fabulousness can come in many forms, and Taylor Mac seems intent on assuming each and every one of them.”
— The New York Times
Beloved for iconic beauty, disarming vulnerability, and soaring spirit, Taylor Mac has spent the last twenty years creating internationally award-winning performance events that at once provoke and embrace diverse audiences.
Equal parts community organizer, Elizabethan fool, and bedazzled bon vivant, Taylor Mac “doesn’t just defy categorization; he makes the categories themselves seem irrelevant” (Time Out NY). One of the great artists of our time, Taylor Mac – writer, performance artist, director, actor, and singer – creates fearlessly experimental works that build community through the making of theater. Mac (who uses judy [lowercase] as a gender pronoun) routinely breaks performance conventions – inviting audiences to consider questions of gender, identity, queerness, and performance itself. Mac’s joyful, charismatic, and vulnerable performance style disarms the audience, turning passive spectators into active collaborators.
An alumnus of New Dramatists, judy is the author of The Hang (with composer Matt Ray); Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Taylor Mac and Matt Ray’s Bark of Millions; Prosperous Fools; The Fre; Hir; The Walk Across America for Mother Earth; The Lily’s Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; Red Tide Blooming; The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac; and the revues Comparison is Violence; Holiday Sauce; and The Last Two People on Earth: an Apocalyptic Vaudeville (created with Mandy Patinkin and Susan Stroman).
Described by the Huffington Post as “a must-see for anyone who wants to see a fairer and kinder society,” Mac is a scintillating speaker and generous provocateur – available to give keynote talks, commencement addresses, Q&A-style public conversations, and appearances that could be paired with the exhilarating HBO Documentary film Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music – which captured the power of Mac’s Pulitzer-finalist magnum opus 24-hour performance art concert. Mac also performs intimate, one-off evenings — “Taylor Mac in Concert” — with bespoke set-lists from the range of judy’s work. These nights of song feature one of the great performers of our time, intermixed with Mac’s signature banter, and backed by an incomparable band.
