The Complete Etudes are Philip Glass’s most personal body of work – a self-portrait of a life’s practice, representing some of the most intimate and inventive music of his oeuvre. As Philip’s longtime creative producers, Pomegranate Arts curates an evening of the 20 piano etudes in their entirety performed by ten (10) featured pianists, each bringing their own unique approach to their instrument and to Glass’s work. The result is an evening of master piano works for the 21st century – one that has sold out multiple performances at the Opera House at BAM, the Philharmonie de Paris, Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall, and most recently the LA Phil’s Walt Disney Concert Hall among many others. Chicago HumanitiesAt Chicago Humanities, renowned pianist Timo Andres performed a selection of The Etudes by Glass, a set of twenty works for solo piano. Following the performance, Andres was joined by John Schaefer of WNYC New York for a wide ranging conversation about the Etudes, a group of works that were originally composed by Glass in order to expand his piano technique. An extraordinary opportunity to pay tribute to the genius of Philip Glass and immerse yourself in the beauty of his iconic music.

The Joyce TheaterOver the course of his illustrious career, renowned composer Philip Glass conceived The Etudes as a set of solo piano works to expand his piano technique. Now amongst Glass’ most popular works, The Etudes have inspired performances and interpretations from artists worldwide. In Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes, five new choreographic perspectives on The Etudes were presented alongside a performance by guest pianist Maki Namekawa, one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Glass’ music. The evening featured works by post-modern innovator Lucinda Childs, Chanon Judson of Urban Bush Women, Justin Peck of New York City Ballet, Brazilian tap artist Leonardo Sandoval, and Los Angeles-based choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber.
