Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes

six master choreographers present five new choreographic perspectives on The Etudes

Over the course of his illustrious career, renowned composer Philip Glass conceived The Etudes as a set of solo piano works to expand his piano technique. Now amongst Glass’s most popular works, The Etudes have inspired performances and interpretations from artists worldwide. In Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes, five new choreographic perspectives on The Etudes will be presented alongside a performance by guest pianist Maki Namekawa, one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Glass’s music. This Pomegranate-produced evening features works by post-modern innovator Lucinda Childs, Chanon Judson of Urban Bush Women, Justin Peck of New York City Ballet, Brazilian tap artist Leonardo Sandoval, and Los Angeles-based choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber.

Dancing with Glass is part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival in New York and was developed in residency at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in celebration of Philip Glass’s 85th Birthday.

Dancing with Glass celebrates the release of our new special edition Philip Glass Piano Etudes (Artisan), a boxed set that includes the Complete Etudes 1-20 and a hardcover book Studies in Time: Essays on the Music of Philip Glass.
