Bark of Millions
a rock opera meditation on queerness from Taylor Mac & Matt Ray
The latest from theater-making renegades Taylor Mac, Matt Ray, and Machine Dazzle, Bark of Millions is an electrifying collision of performance, live music, and drag spectacle. Performances of Bark of Millions range in scale — from intimate duet performances by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray to large scale concerts with a powerhouse collective of artists.
Bark of Millions was first brought to life as a luxuriant epic rock opera meditation on queerness featuring a new collection of 55 original songs by Mac and Ray performed by an international ensemble of 22 artists, co-directed by Niegel Smith and Faye Driscoll commissioned and produced by Pomegranate Arts.
Released in Fall 2026, Bark of Millions the book (Black Dog & Leventhal), is an expression and extension of this transportive experience. A contribution to the queer cannon, Bark of Millions is a unique offering to the queer community, theater obsessives, musicians, performers and art book lovers. Included in the box set are a book of lyrics and a book of music lead sheets for 50 of the songs.
With the fierce elation of a pride parade, Bark of Millions is a transformative body of work that celebrates the power of individuality and human connection. The project in all its forms shatters conventions, pushes boundaries, and brings a bold and joyful new perspective to the stage.
As in his legendary retelling of American history A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, Taylor Mac, Matt Ray and their artistic community use music, dance, and drag to subvert and deconstruct conventional narratives and joyfully, transgressively celebrate queerness in all its forms.
