Over the course of the past thirty-five years, the work of Ushio Amagatsu for his all-male eight-member Tokyo-based company Sankai Juku has become known worldwide for its elegance, technical precision and emotional depth. His contemporary Butoh creations are sublime visual spectacles and deeply moving theatrical experiences. As one of the premiere choreographers at work in the world today, the arrival of a piece by Ushio Amagatsu is a much anticipated event in the dance landscape. His latest creation, Umusuna (2013), evokes the essence of duality and unity, encapsulating in design and movement the Japanese characters of “birth” and “earth” that combine to form the work’s title.
One of the most original and startling dance theater groups to be seen.
